This image relates to the construction of the airstrip Des was forced to build with so many others. He recalled that the British engineers were given the task of designing the runway. They planned it so it had an inverted camber, meaning that all the water from the frequent torrential rains would pool, causing mayhem to pilots trying to take off or land. The POWs’ bodies were almost totally unprotected from the burning heat of the sun while they worked up to 14 hours per day. They didn’t have the luxury of having a chat as depicted.
